The first visit to a gynecologist for teenage girls should be scheduled between the ages of 13-15 years. The first visit does not include a pelvic exam, so there is no need to feel anxious. There is no need to get a pelvic examination before the age of 21, unless symptoms indicate a problem or you’re sexually active and need birth control.
The goal is to meet the doctor, develop a relationship, and talk about age-appropriate issues such as development, body image, weight management and immunizations. This is also a good time to talk about contraception and preventing sexually transmitted diseases.
We offer many different options of birth control including birth control pills, IUDs, Depo-Provera®, and Nexplanon®. Once you have met with one of our providers to discuss these options, you can choose which one will work best for you and your life style.
We also offer the Gardasil® vaccine for females starting at age 9 – this vaccine is to prevent Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which can cause ovarian cancer if left untreated.
